An exciting walk in a spectacularly weathered and deep sandstone gorge.
The Bluff River Gorge is just an hour north of Hobart in the Swansea State Forest near the small settlement of Buckland on the road to the east coast.
The narrow gorge, about 80m deep, is characterised by its steep sides and spectacular sandstone cliffs and caves, with the river forming peaceful limpid pools far below. The walk is generally along a narrow track, just below the gorge rim, and we encounter many severely eroded cliffs formations along our route, as well as prominent bluffs from which to view the narrow gorge face on the other side of the river. The steep lower sides of the gorge are clothed in an under-story of ferns, mosses and lichens, set among a variety of eucalypt species endemic to the region, while higher the forest opens up to a typical dry sclerophyll eucalypt forest, with trees and plants clinging precariously to the gorge sides.
This is a supremely peaceful place, and provides an interesting contrast to the nearby rural setting of Buckland. We lunch along the track, choosing either a sandy ‘beach’ under the shelter of one of the caves or one of the lookout bluffs as our lunch spot, before retracing our steps for our return journey to Hobart.

Our tour grading is based on Tasmania’s track classification system:
T1 – Easy to Moderate
Well defined and wide tracks on easy to moderate terrain, in slightly modified natural environments. You will require a modest level of fitness. Recommended for beginners.
T2 – Moderate
Narrower but distinct tracks which can be muddy in some places, in pristine natural environments. Facilities are minimal and you will encounter few other walkers. These moderate tours require reasonable level of fitness.
T3 – Challenging
You will experience marked but often-indistinct tracks, in very remote and wild areas. These challenging walks need a high level of fitness and some hiking experience.
T4 – Difficult
Tracks are often faint or unmarked in remote and craggy natural areas not included in our schedule, however we will guide selected parties on these tours on request.
