A delightful coastal walk on Bruny Island with sea caves, an arch, and a dramatic cape.

Bruny Island is reached by ferry from the tiny picturesque port of Kettering, less than an hour south of Hobart on the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. The island consists of a narrow sand isthmus (the “Neck”) joining the South and North Bruny Islands, which provided a haven to early explorers (Furneaux, Cook, Bligh). Bruny was also the birthplace of Tasmania’s most celebrated Aboriginal, Truganini.

We preface our walk with a quick side trip to the viewing platform above the Neck before setting off near the island’s airstrip for the beach beside the shallow Big Lagoon, and then on through coastal heathland to the interesting geological formation of Mars Bluff. At low tide, we can skirt this feature to seaward, or climb the track behind the Bluff to continue on the beach on the other side.

The dolerite columns of the Cape form a scenic and dramatic backdrop to this northern margin of Adventure Bay, and we will find a pleasant spot to lunch and maybe take a quick swim before returning by the same route.

  • Our tour grading is based on Tasmania’s track classification system:

    T1 – Easy to Moderate

Well defined and wide tracks on easy to moderate terrain, in slightly modified natural environments. You will require a modest level of fitness. Recommended for beginners.

    T2 – Moderate

Narrower but distinct tracks which can be muddy in some places, in pristine natural environments. Facilities are minimal and you will encounter few other walkers. These moderate tours require reasonable level of fitness.

    T3 – Challenging

You will experience marked but often-indistinct tracks, in very remote and wild areas. These challenging walks need a high level of fitness and some hiking experience.

    T4 – Difficult

Tracks are often faint or unmarked in remote and craggy natural areas not included in our schedule, however we will guide selected parties on these tours on request.
